Description: The axe and jacket was left while I took a break for lunch and was afterwards recorded in a pencil sketch. Although intending to work up a larger finished piece from the sketch the idea lay dormant for several years. It was resurrected when a very dry spring made walking in the leaves a noisy affair, with the contrasting silence taking on a profound quality when I stopped and stood motionless. As I remained still, small sounds eventually imposed themselves into the silence. Blue Denim is the painted result of that experience; the vivid blue of the jacket and the adjacent axe represent the noise, the compositional element of a centrally located tree trunk with right angled shadows impose a static stillness which is enhanced by the sharp light and subtle earth colours. And to represent the small returning sounds is the presence of a small Brown Creeper tucked away along the bottom of the tree trunk. Of course it is not expected that this narrative come automatically to mind by the viewer, but the painting looks the way that it does because of this way of thinking.
